Another flight, another engine scare…

This is the video of my first flight in 24ZN, my X-air, after it had given me a fright in the form of a serious drop in engine power right after take off. I’d surmised that the problem was fuel-related and had gone over the whole fuel system, replacing almost all of it. Now was the time to see if I’d cured the problem.

As the video shows, everything went fine for almost the whole flight, except the engine decided to give me another scare about half-way through at a point the furthest away from Malbec, forcing me to decide what I should do.

  1. Thanks Rog, I’m pretty sure it was too. I think the conditions were just right for it and as I mentioned in the video, it’s noticeable after the event that the engine was running increasingly rougher just before the big rev drop as the ice had slowly begun to melt. It might have been very interesting if the X-air hadn’t had water heated inlet manifolds. I wonder if the icing would have been enough to have reduced the power enough, or even stopped the engine, to have caused a forced landing?

  2. Hi Rog, sounded just like Carb icing. We have had some high humidity spots around here lately. Good flight, I enjoyed the video.
