Well, not quite the same flight actually. I decided to cut out the leg from Malbec to Figeac as I’ve done it quite a few times before and quite honestly, it’s difficult to justify the additional fuel burn at today’s prices.

So the total flying time fell from around 2 hours to about 1 1/2 but the main thing was that I was still going to get to LFCX Castelsarrasin in the south, which I’ve not visited before. I still aimed to drop into LFDX Fumel on the way back, which I’ve been to before, but seeing as it lay almost directly on the route back to Malbec that was no hardship. Here’s a pic of the route that I had planned.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_00_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

But things didn’t go exactly to plan. Despite the fact that since my last attempt I’d tested my two GoPros hooked up to external battery packs and they both ran, there was still a problem with the GoPro Hero 7 Black that I attach to the Savannah’s wing. For some reason it started recording when connected but then almost immediately switched itself of and then reverted to standby mode. It eventually seemed to start up OK but I didn’t have much faith that it would continue and sure enough, after the flight I found that it had only run for 5 minutes before switching off and hadn’t even recorded the take off.

But this time I had more luck with the GoPro Hero 8 Black that I mount in the cabin, but even that didn’t continue running for the whole flight as it should have done. But at least I managed to record the touch-and-goes at Castelsarrasin and Fumel before it gave up the ghost. Also, although it recorded the sound of the radio, it was broken and drowned out by the engine noise, so taken all round there’s still a lot more work to be done to get the GoPros working as I want them to. When I think how easy it was to record MYRO’s old radio back in the day, even using my old Canon video tape recorders which I only had to plug straight into the radio’s audio port. Those were the days!

But back to the flight. When I can I’ll make a video using the cabin GoPro recording but until then here are loads of shots that I’ve lifted from it together with more that I shot out of the cabin window, that show how it went.

First, taxying down to the top of Malbec’s runway and taking off.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_01_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_02_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_03_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

As I was using my new Chinese Blackview tablet for the first time, I thought it wise to also start my MemoryMap software on my phone just so it would already be running in case anything went wrong. In fact, apart from keep auto-dimming every 5 minutes when it shouldn’t have done, it worked faultlessly.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_04_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

Here’s a general shot that I took after I got the Savannah set up at 2400 feet tripping along nicely at 150 kmh with engine revs of 4900. Conditions were perfect and the aircraft almost flew itself. I chose 2400 feet because as it was Saturday and there would be a few other week end flyers about, I thought it would be a good choice to avoid them and in fact a couple did fly past both lower and higher than that.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_05_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

Heading south, here’s a shot of Chateau Beynac on its rock promontory overlooking the river Dordogne.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_06_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

And just a bit further on, there’s Sarlat-Domme aerodrome over to the left in the distance.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_07_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

The next two shots are of me taking some pictures of Cahors and one of the photos that resulted.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_08_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_09_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

I was heading straight for the airfield at Cahors but I decided that as it’s quite a major regional airfield and I didn’t plan to land there, I’d give it a wide berth today. You can see its runway in the left distance in the next shot as I turned right to head for Castelsarrasin.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_10_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

Almost as soon as I turned towards Castelsarrasin a change in the landscape became apparent with rolling wooded hills giving way to flatter terrain and a multitude of cultivated fields.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_11_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

As I flew towards the south-west I spotted this charming little domed church sitting on the top of a small hill.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_12_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

Not long after I began to descend to join the circuit at Castelsarrasin airfield, which came up on my nose with the town of Moissac off on my right beam.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_13_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

As I joined overhead the field I could see a white aircraft taxying out to take off on runway 10. It was lucky that I did because until then I wasn’t sure which runway would be in use, there being little or no wind. It turned out that the lady pilot was using the grass runway (which only gliders and aircraft based there are allowed to use) for a couple of circuits and I slotted in for my touch-and-go after she’d taken off for her first one.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_14_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

The next few shots are of me turning downwind right-hand for runway 10, then onto base leg and finally turning final to land.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_15_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_16_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_17_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_18_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

The next sequence are all of the final approach into Castelsarrasin, the touch down and the take off after the touch-and-go.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_19_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_20_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_21_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_22_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_23_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

This is the climb-out that I then initiated. I thought that as the other pilot was flying circuits, I’d get out of the pattern pretty smartly. In the next shot I was already flying at over 150 kmh and shortly after I climbed up to 2000 feet at 1000 feet per minute, which is pretty good going.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_24_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

Here’s a shot of me taking a photo of the town of Moissac.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_25_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

Moissac is in the Tarn-et-Garonne département and sits right on the river Garonne itself.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_26_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_27_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

The next leg took me to Fumel and here’s a shot of the approach to the airfield from the south.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_28_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

The next sequence shows the turn onto final to land, the final approach and landing and the subsequent climb out. Although there was nobody else there as there never seems to be, I still climbed out pretty smartly to continue the flight north to return to Malbec.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_29_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_30_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_31_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_32_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_33_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

It was at this point that the GoPro in the cabin finally died. I was still able to take the odd shot with my little camera, however, and here’s a final shot of the ancient town of Belvès that I took as I passed by.

<img decoding="async" src="http://micro-trike.co.uk/images/11jun22_34_s.jpg"alt="null"/>

So that was it! Although things did not go as smoothly as planned I did at least manage to get away and end up with something to show for it. Actually, the flight was almost effortless in the conditions and I greatly enjoyed it. I’m just hoping that I’ll be able to sort my GoPros out before the next one!

As expected, it was a perfect flying morning this morning so I was over at Malbec bright and early getting things ready for the flight I’ve been trying to do for some time now.
