The reality. We’re into a cold snap that will last for a few days with overnight temperatures forecast to fall below freezing. This is colder than usual for this time of year but at least (for the moment anyway) we’re spared a cruel wind to go with it, unlike, so my family tell me, as in the UK. But the reality is that my caravan water system froze last night.<\/p>\n

I checked in the early hours and it was still flowing, with some hesitation, but I turned it off outside just in case any ice that formed burst the hosepipe and water began leaking out. This morning when I went to turn the tap on my standpipe back on again it was frozen and when I thawed it by pouring hot water over it there was still nothing coming out of the taps inside the caravan. That means that the hosepipe that connects the caravan is plugged with ice.<\/p>\n

I can still get water in a container from my outside tap which itself isn’t frozen up, so it’s like being back where I was originally. But I’ll have to think about this. The temperature is rising as I type this and I therefore expect water to start flowing again some time soon. However, I can’t take the risk that the system might freeze again and burst some time in the future, so maybe I’ll buy some lengths of pipe insulation and attach some around the standpipe from where it emerges from the ground and some more of a smaller diameter around the hosepipe itself that connects to the caravan. I think it’ll be worth trying, anyway.<\/p>\n
